Covering Up Good Stuff in Art Journaling...

Hello!

Sometimes it is necessary to cover up good stuff when art journaling.  In creating layers, I will often cover up elements that I really like.  I don't worry about "ruining" my page or not liking the end result.  The freedom I give myself to cover up things makes the process more enjoyable and more often than not I end up more pleased with the results.  Give yourself permission this week to cover up some good stuff and see what happens!

Have a  blessed day!

Roben-Marie

Art Challenge:  Covering up good stuff
Journal Prompt:  Going undercover

My first layer is an inky piece of newsprint that I glued to my page.  I used the Stones Divided stencil with molding paste to create the half circle shapes.  I outlined them with a black stabilo pencil and added water with a water brush to spread the color.  I also painted an oval shape with watered down black gesso.

Next, I added some white circles with a Sharpie Poster Paint Pen to the black oval and used a handmade mark making tool and white acrylic paint to create the rings.  I journaled at the bottom of the page with a black pen (this is the good stuff I plan to cover up)!

To finish my page, I stitched a tag and other elements to an inky piece of paper, added a circle sticker, stamped a feather from Rae Missigman's Natural Elements rubber stamp set to book paper, trimmed and stitched to the top.  I stitched a scrap piece of paper and glued it to the top of the black painted oval.

Cover Story Workshop Open for Registration...

Hello!

As an avid art journaler, I am often asked what I do with my journal covers?  I usually wait until I have filled my journal but there is something special about carrying around a journal that has a beautiful painted cover.  I used to work primarily on lose pages and would bind them when finished, and while I still like doing that, I have fallen in love with the Dylusions Journal by Dyan Reaveley with its perfect size and mixed media paper.  The Art to the 5th™ artists all agree this is an amazign journal and have taken the guess work out of what do to with your journal covers by creating four classes in one with Cover Story™!

Anticipation, apprehension, excitement…

A new journal equals blank pages filled with unlimited possibility, of personal challenges and of achieving new levels. It deserves a cover you can’t stop touching!

Instructors Lorraine Bell, Sandi Keene, Rae Missigman and Roben-Marie Smith share their distinct technique filled cover designs. 4 artists, 4 classes, 4+ hours of step by step video instruction on how to collage, doodle, grunge, gelli plate, sketch, paint and watercolor your way to a cover that you will love. Choose one design or collect your favorite techniques from each artist and blend them into a style all your own.

Use these designs on art journal covers, journal pages, cards and gifts. These designs are not limited to an art journal cover.  Each instructor has condensed hours of video into one hour of techniques, insights and products that make facing the blank page exhilarating.

See you at The Art5 Academy!

Have a  blessed day!

Roben-Marie

October 31, 2014 - Week 45 Challenge:  Add a tab

Visit the Art to the 5th blog for more inspiration.

I made tabs with a hand punch (shaped like a tab) and then attached to a variety of papers I like to call "page stacks."  I layered them so they will lift up so I can write on them or attach ephemera or photos.  I stiched the whole stack at the top of my page with a sewing machine.
